5 KEYS TO BREAKING FROM PORN ADDICTION!

INSPIRATION

Porn addiction is a problem that keeps many people bound including some Christians. The church of God is usually in denial about such “Taboo topics” and we turn a blind eye as though people are not struggling and marriages broken because of this big problem. It took decades for the world to believe the science behind the reasoning that smoking cigarettes is very harmful and can kill, just as we learning and seeing the same denial in the world today about the harmful nature of porn addiction.

Did you know that in the last couple of years studies have shown an increase in sexual problems among young males. Whilst the numbers vary, a 2007 study of the American Journal of Medicine showed that this affects more than 18 million men in the United States over the age of 20. One of the factors has been attributed to the widespread exposure to internet porn.

Did you know Porn can Change and Rewire your Brain?

Believe it or not, studies show that people who frequently use pornography have brains that are less connected, less active, and even smaller in some areas. Porn is a very addictive and bad habit. But just as every habit can be broken though some with a little difficulty, it is possible to break away from porn addiction.

HERE ARE 5 KEYS TO BREAKING FROM PORN ADDICTION!

  • 1 – Accept you have a problem!

The first key to healing and recovery in any problem is actually coming to terms with the fact that you have a problem and you need help. Rather than feeling guilt and shame whilst repeatedly struggling and drowning in your problem;

1: Identify the root cause of the problem: When you figure out your inner motives and the external incentives that drive your actions (porn addiction), you will go a long way toward changing them.

2: Repent and ask God to help you with your problem.

3: Confide in someone you can trust and account to as this trustworthy person should be able to help you in your journey to recovery from your addiction and leaving all judgement out.

  • 2 – Decide that you really want to change and believe that you can!

You can only change what you decide you want to change but most importantly trust God in the process and stand on His word; For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Hebrews 4:15″ It is very important to commit your thoughts and plans to the Lord and also understand the importance of commitment as a necessary first step in change. Remember in your weakness His strength is made perfect!

  • 3 – Goals are progressive!

Lets just get this out there, God is still performing and able to perform miracles today as He did back then. Yes He could remove your desire for porn instantaneous and addictions have been healed instantly. However for those people whose recovery process is gradual and progressive; don’t lose heart. Remember that bad habits take years to establish themselves. You’re not going to throw them off in an instant. However you can take steps to minimise risk.

1: Occupy your mind by reading the word and spending time in prayer.

2: Avoid being alone for long hours especially if you are likely to fall if left alone for too long.

3: Do whatever you must even if it means someone installing child protection on your internet or getting rid of it altogether.

  • 4 – Don’t be discouraged by occasional slip ups!

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13”

Don’t be discouraged by occasional slip ups, instead try to figure out why you slipped. Furthermore don’t allow slip-ups to become a constant  re-occurrence. Utilise your accountability officer/friend or mentor and make sure you are talking to them especially in weak moments.

  • 5 – Free Yay!

I am hopeful you have now beat your addiction and are maintaining your freedom. If not, seek formalised support programs and continue to pray and meditate on the word and also ask your pastors to pray for you.

John 8:36 New International Version

36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
