Greatness is birthed out of obedience. Today I sat looking at accounts of all the great men in the bible, where i noted a pattern. When you look at Samson, his peak was linked to his ability to heed Gods voice, and his downfall was linked to disobedience. I then looked at Solomon (The wisest king) his peak again was during the time that he obeyed God and his demise down to disobedience and not heeding Gods warning.
There are many people who confuse greatness with sacrifice. So, yes whilst that may be a contributing factor; it is not the sole reason. Many people have made so many sacrifices in life only to end up taking the wide road to destruction, missing the narrow road to life. The reason Abraham became great and the father of many nations was not because of the sacrifice, God had already provided that sacrifice (Intentional God). Abraham became great because of his ability to heed Gods voice and obey.
When God told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, God honoured Abraham’s obedience and not his ability to sacrifice and the angel said to him (“Now I know you fear God (fear = reverence or have utmost respect for) “). When God told Abram (Abraham) “Go from your country, your people and your fathers household to the land I will show you; i will make your name great and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you, I will curse; and all people on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:1-3 We learn through Abram’s life again in this scenario that obedience is better than sacrifice. Abraham obeyed God over and over.
Your blessing is not and will never be in a sacrifice (please understand that where there is a sacrifice, it is usually followed with a complaint or a you owe me mentality …. ” I sacrificed this to get you that” ), but rather in obedience you simply follow God’s instructions by giving him the reverence he deserves. Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice so that we never have to sacrifice again. Another example can be seen in this text in scripture (Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” ) “Give” is a command or rather an Instruction that requires a response. it is up to you to either obey and give willingly; or sacrifice and give grudgingly and not whole-heartedly. (I hope the picture is becoming more clear) Now going back to the subject at hand, how can you be great if you are not obedient? Remember sacrifice is just one of the contributing factors to greatness in human nature but does not paint the ultimate story of Gods picture to greatness. If you want to study the greatest men, just turn to the bible and see account of the reverence these men had for God and also pay attention to what caused their demise, so you too will not fall victim of the same traps.
In the world of man, yes you have to make sacrifices to achieve certain things (Glory goes to man “I sacrificed this to get that etc….). But when God has appointed you and called you, when he commands you to move as he re-position’s you; you will never look at that re-positioning or what you are leaving behind as a sacrifice because you are acting out of obedience.
So, you want to be great; huh! But are you willing to be obedient?
