“Why is it bad to Question the scriptures and think for ourselves?” asked “Rosie” one of our readers. She carried on saying
“I remember reading someone saying it was blasphemous or close to it on a different christian forum. So yes, some people thinks it is a huge crime and sinful to even have a shred of doubt. While actually I see it is healthy and means that you won’t be tossed about by ‘every wind of doctrine.'”
So Is it wrong to question scriptures or should we never questioned scriptures?
First and foremost I would begin by establishing what exactly would you be doubting/questioning. Is it the scriptures or someone’s interpretation of them? I believe this is a good starting point for this conversation because the bible tells us;
2 Timothy 3:16-17New King James Version (NKJV)
16 All Scripture is given (God breathed…. other version) by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
I personally don’t feel I have to question the Bible. However, I can understand a need for questions as a means of growth. Because we question in order to understand but not to undermine. There is a huge difference between questioning God and having questions as you grow and yearn for more. So, this is an important point to consider.
God is not a dictator and gives us freewill and the ability to think for ourselves. He will give instructions and guidance but never twist our arm to comply and that’s where the room for thinking (common sense) comes in. He gives the base and we build on it by His direction and truth
Personally, I don’t question the word of God because like i stated earlier, to me every word has been breathed out of he mouth of Of God. By studying the word I also strongly believe that the Holy spirit is a great teacher. Throughout my faith life and as i daily grow I find that God leads me everyday and the bible has been very much factual in how the Lord shows me things.
If you have a solid relationship with God and are daily building on it, it doesn’t matter what winds of doctrine blow in, you will find that you will never be led into deception because God will always speak.
I know I’ve broaden the answer by touching into other aspects but it all ties in and I hope it helps.
God bless you
