Many who travel along the Interstate 65 will be happy to know the long lost and iconic sign with the image of a red-tailed devil with a message reading: “Go To Church or the Devil Will Get You.” will be making a come back. Many had wondered for the past year where the sign had gone to because the sign was a well-known landmark whether passers-by agreed with its sentiments or not.
The sign, was placed decades ago by the W.S. “Bill” Newell, but was capsized by a storm in the fall of 2016. It was located on Newell’s private property near the Verbena exit beside the north-bound lanes. Newell was known as a Christian and a patriot who enjoyed providing the message for drivers to think about.
In 2009 after Newell’s death, his sons Sam and Keith, took over the care-taking duties of the sign. Regardless of the fact that the original sign was damaged when it capsized, when talking to al.com Althea Newell, wife of Sam Newell said the devil image was somehow salvaged and will be used on the new sign and the message will also likely be the same with the exact wording as the original.
A new signboard has been erected closer to a picturesque mill waterwheel so that it is more visible to those travelling north, according to Althea. The signboard as of current is covered with blank, white paper.
