Jesus Calms the Storm
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Many of us are sailing through untamed waters and our ships have been tossed, bruised and beaten by the angry waves of life. But as we sail through this racket and uncertainty as God may seem far to the natural eye, we are ever surrounded by God’s faithfulness that never ceases. It only requires the understanding of our heart to be open to see the reality of God’s goodness and presence even in times of furious storms.
Jesus’s disciples were surrounded by a furious storm but their limited sight caused them to forget that He who calms the seas was already with them and therefore nothing could harm them. Which is why i believe it was important for them to encounter this storm so that they too could be reminded of Gods faithfulness. Sometimes we all need a wake up call and a lesson to remind us of the power and faithfulness of God.
And that is the most important lesson to walk away with from this reading. The assurance that no matter what happens or uncertainties we may face in life, God is ever faithful and we can trust Him with anything.
